Introduction

Long before the opioid crisis gave way to the current fentanyl nightmare – we had the meth epidemic. It was the first major public health crisis of the 21st century and it hit the West Coast especially hard.

DIVERSION is a political thriller that follows the rise of a pharmaceutical company executive in the midst of a corporate takeover, at the height of the crystal meth epidemic, and a young investigator's journey to uncover the source of precursor chemicals showing up on the West Coast.

Complex parallel storylines examine the relationship between the pharmaceutical industry, illegal drug trade and the government. While DIVERSION is a work of fiction, the extensive research has grounded the story in facts - real events and data available in Congressional archives, DEA public documents, as well as in the series of articles published in The Oregonian.

Set in corporate boardrooms and government’s halls of power, DIVERSION focuses on the system that facilitates the addiction. When real evil is not promulgated only by criminals but lies within the corporate pursuit of profit.

Synopsis

Jake Walker is a Diversion Investigator whose job is to track the chemicals that could potentially be used to make illegal drugs. It is a frustrating job, one that leaves him feeling powerless in the face of a growing crystal meth epidemic. While examining the aftermath of a meth lab fire, Jake discovers a large quantity of unusually pure pseudoephedrine. As Jake starts connecting the dots, he finds himself the target of a well organized illegal network.

Janet Holden is running a struggling pharmaceutical business when a multinational giant puts an offer to acquire the company. Lured by the promise of a new beginning for herself, Janet works hard to make sure the sale goes through. But Jake’s investigation threatens to put Janet’s plans on hold as they end up on opposite ends of a very complex equation.

The interests of drug traffickers and pharmaceutical giants intersect in an arena where politicians face off against business leaders, lawyers strive to control journalists, and cops sometimes act like gang members. Personal lives, government regulation and corporate ethics come under scrutiny as the film explores the dilemmas, desires and decisions of the individuals who inevitably cross the grey line between right and wrong.

The Black List coverage:

DIVERSION features an exciting plot with many different elements and intense characters devoted to their goals...

The characters are highly proactive and easily castable, and the film would appeal to adult, mostly male audiences... The authors have a good grasp on the pharmaceutical business, and the plot is elevated and well-formatted...

The references to actual drug legislation and its affect on the market help to ground this story in reality and provide supporting evidence to Jake’s theory...

The ending is highly convoluted and action-packed, and the script has great potential as a broad political action thriller.

Based on scientific research and mathematical models mapping applause and standing ovations, Applause! explores the rhythms and the drama of a typical applause and celebrates the dynamic between the society and the individual.

By giving applause, we collectively express our appreciation for a shared experience to the person or people that have made this experience possible. Multiple studies have shown that, as our emotions prompt us to strike our hands together, this may feel like an impulse but it is actually something governed by a fairly strict set of social rules. At the very least, how hard and how long we clap is influenced directly by how hard and how long those around us do.

Applause! interprets the scientific data and creates a purely artistic and fun exercise imagining what would happen if audiences were aware of their own performance.
